Your idea of posting articles and exchanging links is indeed good. They are a good start.
Be sure, however, to post original articles. Also trade links, as far as possible, with ‘related’ websites having a high PR.
Additionally, there are several other ways such as SEO, Google Adsense, Yahoo Search Marketing, Social Networking, Banner ads etc.
Traffic Building is a long journey of learning and experience, but well worth it.
